Nolan Raihania – Impact on community
C company veteran Nolan Raihania reminisces about the impact that the Second World War had on small communities like Te Muriwai.
Translation
I was still at school when the war began in 1939, wasn't it? I was at the school at Te Muriwai. The year afterwards, my parents sent me to school at Te Aute, Te Aute College, to be educated. I had been at that school for three years while news kept coming back about the war, about the people that went off in the 28th Māori Battalion, as you know, people from our community. Many people went from the settlement of Te Muriwai, many went. When I finished school, goodness me, I saw there were no adults left in the village at the time. They had all gone to fight. Some died overseas.
