Teachers' notes
Tōku toa, he toa rangatira.
My bravery is inherited from the chiefs who were my forebears.
The multi-media resource Kia Mau was originally designed for senior Māori-medium teachers and students – to accommodate the tikanga ā-iwi achievement objectives at levels 6–8. The resource focuses on two waiata and two haka that have an association with the Māori Battalion. On this site, you can now access the teachers’ notes and the associated DVD clips in English.
There are four teaching units in these teachers’ notes, with each unit taking a social inquiry approach. The notes are designed for the social science discipline, social studies, at curriculum levels 6–8. Different themes are emphasised at each level including social justice, leadership, and bereavement.
